26.11.05 Regent Cup 2nd Round
Kelma 5 - 2 FC Village

For the first time in weeks FC Village were able to put out a near full strength side as Ritchie, Chris, Cottier, Currie and Nic all returned. However Tommy, Brian and Moggett couldn’t make it and with Leigh still out injured they managed to get twelve out and then it looked as though they would have to start the match with 9 men but Dava, Cottier and Nic arrived just in time. For this second round Regent Cup tie against Div 2 opponents and fellow Pitch 1’ers Kelma, the Village knew that as usual this would be a tough match. However they started the brighter of the two sides, looked comfortable throughout the first half and took the lead before seeing the match turn on its head in injury time. With the Village playing ‘the Chelsea’ formation they were attacking down the flanks and getting a lot of players forward. Eventually they got the reward their play deserved when Chris put Sweeney away down the left and he cut in to hit a cross shot which flew in off a defender on the line. Still the visitors dominated and they were never really troubled defensively with Jay having to make only one real save as half time approached. Then when the Village failed to clear a corner the ball fell to a Kelma player just inside the box and he fired home the equaliser. Straight from the restart the ball went back to Dava and he was robbed by a Kelma forward who ran on to play in his partner to score. So instead of it being Kelma who would have to chase the game at the start of the second half it was now the Village boys. This they gamely did as they dominated once again and then M.O.M Sweeney got played through only to see his lob hit the bar and get scrambled away to safety. Suddenly instead of finding themselves back on level terms Kelma hit them once again with a quick fire 1-2 with 2 identical breakaway goals to put them firmly in pole position at 4-1. However the Village never gave up and continued to play well, create the chances but it just wasn’t their day. Even when Kelma broke free to make it 5-1 they kept going and after John had seen one goal bound effort somehow get blocked on the line he was on hand to fire in from close range after Booey had set him up. So for the fourth week running the Village had found themselves looking at a bit of a tonking at the final whistle when in fact all of the games were much closer. So that’s it for a while with cup matches as the Village return to league action with three import games before the Xmas break.
