Slak F.C. 1 - 0 FC Village

In the words of Victor Meldrew “I don’t believe it”! Yet again the Village’s failure to convert their chances cost them dearly as they slumped to their seventh defeat on the trot. For this first ever encounter with Slak F.C. the Village lost Cottier, Dave and Ste but saw the return of  Ritchie and Graham and much to the relief of the manager  Leigh which once more give them a more formidable looking back four. With the referee giving the team a stern pre-match lecture due to recent events involving other ref’s and the leagues insistence that he write up a report on the Village team the boys kicked off knowing where they stood. On a decent sized but somewhat boggy pitch it was the visitors who dominated the early proceedings without really creating much in front of goal. They forced several corners and got some free kicks in decent areas but failed to make the most of them whilst down at the other end Jay was virtually redundant in goal. So for the first time this season the game was goalless at the turn around and the second half started in a very similar fashion. Slak nearly opened the scoring when they got a free kick which Jay tipped over the bar but apart from that they offered very little. As for the Village they spent a far bit of the time in and around the home box but once again that final shot, pass or cross was lacking. Sweeney made the keeper work with a drive across the area but then disaster struck as Slak booted the ball down the other end and the one defensive slip all afternoon allowed a forward to run on and open the scoring. The game had had 0-0 written all over it but now the Village had to do something to get at least a point and they did try. Sweeney brought out a brilliant save from the home keeper and then Booey waltzed his way through their defence to set up sub Kev but he hit his shot straight at the keeper from close range. You got to start thinking then it just wasn’t going to be a Village day and although they huffed and puffed for the remaining time Slak held on and got a second win on the trot. The ref tried to lessen the blow of defeat by saying that they had played well and received no bookings where as Slak had 4 players booked but it was little comfort in once again losing a match they should have really won.
