FC Village 5 - 1 Tower F.C.
At long last a win for F.C. Village. After the previous week’s poor showing there was at one point on the Saturday morning the possibility of calling the game off as the number of missing players grew by the hour. Ritchie and Chris returned but there was no sign of Gary or Nic and with Cottier, Moggett, Dava unavailable they turned up at Levers with just nine. Manager Steve then made a decision to don his boots for the first time this season at the ripe old age of 49 and then they found that Ritchie would arrive but late so they would have 11 for most of the game. Having played on some poor pitches in their last few games it was great to get back playing on the excellent Levers pitch and this would play a big part in the eventual result. The visitors settled down the quicker but were unable to make the most of this but were suddenly handed a gift wrapped opening goal when Jay got Leigh’s back pass, beat his defender but then slipped as he was about to clear and a Tower forward slotted home. The visitors probably thought that was it now, against ten men the flood gates would open but the Village had other ideas. Urged on by the ‘old’ head of the team they got back in to the match and started to make in roads on the visiting goal using the wide spaces. Eventually they were rewarded just before the interval when manager Steve put in Booey on the edge of the area who in turn knocked the ball wide to Colin on the right. He went to the line and pulled the ball back for Sweeney to sweep in at the far post. A great equaliser and they were now up to the full 11 as half time arrived. Minutes in to second half things got even better as the Village took the lead for the first time as Chris’ deep cross was dropped by the keeper and Colin had the simple task of tapping home. It wasn’t long before another free flowing move ended with Booey clean through on goal but the keeper tipped his chip wide of the post. However he made amends immediately as he powered home Sweeney’s corner with a great header making it 3-1. The home side were in full flow now and went looking for that fourth killer goal. Ritchie made a great run and crossed for Sweeney but his shot was blocked and they spurned a couple of other chances. As for the Tower they still kept going but with Jay in fine form and making a crucial save they couldn’t find a way past the Village defence as both Currie and Leigh made superb tackles. Finally that fourth goal arrived when the ball was played in to Booey and he turned his defender to fire past the diving keeper for his eleventh of the season. Then just before the end the Village capped a superb display when Booey was fouled in the box and up stepped Sweeney to convert the penalty for his second of the game. An excellent game for the Village as all eleven played their part with the outstanding Ritchie getting a deserved M.O.M. |
