21.01.06 Joe Shields Cup 1st round
Wirral Wanderers 3 - 0 FC Village
Disaster day! Joe Shields Cup first round tie against old foes Wirral Wanderers and the Village put in their worst display of the season so far. Once again several key players were missing as Dava, Ritchie and Chris were all unavailable so the squad was down to the bare bones. On a very poor playing surface the Village just failed to get going from the outset and it was obvious they were in for a tough match. Chances came at both ends, the best for the visitors fell to Booey but he fired wide and then the Wanderers got a bit of luck as the ball fell in to the path of one of their forwards who fired home. Still trailing at the interval the Village just couldn’t raise their game and when Mogget got his marching orders for remarks made to one of the Wirral players they knew it wasn’t their day. Then a long range effort from the Wanderers star man bounced awkwardly in front of Jay and was in the net for 0-2. The home side wrapped things up when the same player hit home a fine free kick for which Nic rather harshly got booked for. With the tie lost the Village suddenly found their feet but it was all too late. They hit the bar, should have had a penalty when Booey was brought down in the area but the ref gave them a free kick outside the box and then when they did get a penalty minutes from the end for a push on Booey, Colin made a real hash of it and it meant a second consecutive goalless game. No more cups games this season which leaves 8 remaining league games (Wallasey Wanderers have folded) in which they must try and get things sorted. |
