AC Brookley 7-2 FC Village
30/09/06 - Regent Cup
FC Village went out of the Regent Cup with what in the end looked like a hammering but as in their last cup game that was certainly not the story. Looking to be at full strength for this first round cup tie against AC Brookley the Village suffered the usual Saturday morning disappointment of losing players as Booey, Nic, Lee W and Maggott were all missing because of various reasons. However Ritchie returned to the line up and was to be instrumental in most of the good things that came from the Village side. On a pretty poor playing surface despite only being September and with the wind against them the Village surprised their Div 1 opponents as they burst out the traps and nearly scored in the opening couple of minutes. Sweeney broke free of the AC defence but his shot just went wide of the post and some 5 minutes later he got away again but this time his effort went over the bar. Then Colin volleyed just over the bar after a flowing move from the Village team as the side dominated the proceedings. With it just looking a matter of time as to when the visitors would score up popped AC to break away and go one up. Then in a goalmouth scramble down at the other end the ball reached Colin and he hammered his shot towards goal only for the keeper to keep it out. Just before half time AC broke away again and the centre forward curled in his second of the game to give them a somewhat flattering lead at the interval. The Village still felt they were in with a chance as long as they got that early goal and that’s exactly what happened. Colin put in Sweeney and this time he ran clear to fire the ball in to the far corner and reduce the arrears. Then the bit of fortune that the side could have done with went the way of the home team when a corner was played short at the near post and took a wicked deflection off the surface, went under Dava’s foot and diverted off the AC centre forward’s leg in to the net for his hat trick. Within minutes the referee handed the home team a fourth goal when a player was miles offside but he allowed them to play on and make it 4-1. Game over but the Village kept plugging away and pushing forward in numbers. This left the defence with little cover and it wasn’t long before AC had increased their lead with another two goals before Sweeney got a consolation with his second of the match as he beat a couple of defenders and fired home a great shot. However AC and their centre forward had the final say when he netted his sixth of the game from the goal line to give them a 7-2 victory and second them through to the next round. So for the second cup tie this season they did put in a good performance only to come away with nothing. So as they the side can now concentrate on the league.
