Wirral LFC 1-8 FC Village
18/11/06 - League
The Village recorded their second 8-1 victory in a week as they overwhelmed their young opponents down at Borough Road. With Ritchie and Edgy still out injured the Village then lost both Cottier and Muzza to work commitments but saw the return of Lee H and in the end had one sub in Mike. On the big but uneven playing surface the game kicked off and it only took the visitors 30 seconds or so to open their account as Maggott broke free and although the keeper saved his shot there was poacher Colin to net from close range. Virtually straight from the kick off the Village were on the attack when they got a free kick Sweeney picked out Booey at the far post and he swept home. Less than two minutes gone and the side were two up and had virtually won the game. The Village continued to dominate but Wirral tried hard to get back in to the game and it seemed for a while the ref did his level best to help them. On one attack there must have been at least three forwards offside but the ref waved play on and when Jay saved the attempt and the ball was cleared away and he asked what was going on the ref gave Wirral an indirect free kick in the area. A very strange decision but one that he was to repeat in the second half. Just before half time the Village doubled their lead as firstly Sweeney set up Booey for a second time for a snap shot in the six yard box and then Maggott found the space and time at the far post to hammer in from a corner. The second half was exactly the same as the first as the Village scored in the opening minute of the kick off. This time they got a corner (see gallery for photo) and Maggott’s corner was headed home at the far post by Nic for his first of the season. Goal number six went to Colin although there was some doubt about it as he cut in from the goal line and saw his shot come cross hit a defender and go in. There could have easily been more goals as the Sweeney had no luck this week when his goal bound header was well saved by the Wirral keeper and then a free kick taken by him smacked against the bar. Eventually M.O.M Booey scored his second hat trick in consecutive games when he fired in from the edge of the area with his left foot for number seven and then Maggott finished things off when Booey put him in the clear and his exquisite lob became goal of the game. It looked as though the Village were going to keep only their second clean sheet of the season despite the ref again letting Wirral play on when well off side only for Jay to pull off a great save and then award a free kick back up by the half way line for questioning his decision. However just before the final whistle the Wirral were rewarded for never giving up when they broke free and scored a well taken consolation. So two 8-1 wins in a row albeit against the bottom two clubs and a win that saw the Village climb to pole position in the league table due to most of the teams playing cup games whilst theirs was a league match. All to play for now as the team must keep it going in the next few weeks.
