Report: Bebington Rovers 2 FCVillage 4
FC Village got back to winnings ways with a comfortable win over last years whipping boys Bebington Rovers who are a much improved team for this season. The side travelled to the ground with a near full strength side as Timmy returned along with Jason and Fowler which meant that there were five on the bench to choose from. Otherwise the same team that had kicked off the previous week started this game and this time there no repeat of a poor start.
Having said that, straight from the kick off the Village misplaced their pass back and Leigh had to hack the ball away but they were soon in their stride and got a great chance to opening the scoring early on. Booey made a good run in to the home penalty box and was upended so the ref (who had an excellent game) had no choice but to point to the spot. With Fowler not on the field it was left to Maggot to coolly slot home and make it 1-0 to the visitors. You would have thought that the Village would now go on and press home an advantage but the Rovers are a much tougher team this year and they made their visitors work hard for that all important next goal. After close calls it came midway through the half as Booey this time won the ball down in the corner, beat another defender on the goal line before crossing for Maggot who controlled and volleyed in to the far corner. Still Rovers kept plugging away and they were rewarded some 5 minutes later when a move down their right saw one of their forwards fire a neat goal from just outside the area to reduce the arrears. The Village now stepped up a gear knowing that this wasn’t going to be easy and they were rewarded with a third goal just before the interval. Machin got the ball out on the left and he cut inside, beat a couple of defenders with his pace and then slotted past the advancing keeper for 3-1.
Now feeling confident that they could win the game the Village gave Harper a go for the whole of the second half at left back and he slotted in really well, making one excellent last ditch tackle midway through the half. As in the first half the Village started brightly and increased their lead when the ref adjudged a Rovers defender had handled a pass in the area and he once again pointed to the spot. The Rovers defence thought it was more of ball against hand rather than deliberate hand ball but the ref insisted and although Maggot missed at the first attempt the ref made him take it again as he wasn’t ready and this time Maggot confidently slotted home to complete his hat-trick. Soon after the Village had the chance to introduce both Fowler and Timmy for a run out as they replaced Maggot and Crozzer. This allowed the game to open up somewhat and both teams had chances to add to their tally but it left to the home side to score the final goal of the game. Another long ball out of their defence wasn’t cleared by the Village defence and one of the Rovers subs ran on to slot home for a second consolation goal. So the Village warmed up for their big game this weekend against the division favourites Future with a comfortable if unspectacular win.
