Report: Future 1 FCVillage 3
"Say we are, we are, we are going up". That was the cry on Saturday evening during their end of season do from the jubliant FC Village players as they celebrated a superb win over Future the Div 2 Champions to secure the runners up spot. As with the previous game the Village were still missing Leigh, JJ and Pete and with Cottier away again they were lucky that Timmy made himself available. So Timmy slotted in on the right which meant Dava returned to his right back slot and Lee moved over to the centre of defence. Otherwise it was the usual suspects and they were joined for this vitally important final match by Dave and Jason who were on the bench.
With team photo, April awards presented and a bit of team bonding done the Village kicked off in a determined mood and stunned the home side by taking the lead within the opening 10 minutes. The visitors were awarded a free kick out on the right which Ashley curled over to the far post where Booey came in and thundered home yet another great header for 1-0. Slowly but surely Future started to get back in to the game and they began to force the pace and in doing so had the Village on the back foot for a lot of the time. The home side seemed to get corner after corner as they pressurised the Village goal but with Jay in great form and his defence dying for the cause they appeared to be coping with everything that came their way. Then just before the interval a long ball was flicked on for a Future forward to run on to and fire in a deserved equaliser.
With the scores level at the turn around the Village knew that once again Future would take the game to them after the restart but with everyone from Maggot up front playing a lone role through the midfield and defence to Jay defending for their lives they kept them at bay. Once again they must have got to double figures in corners and when they did past Jay there was Dava twice to clear off the line. Jay made several good saves but then somehow kept out a shot that was going in to the top corner. Then midway through the half the Village made a rare attack when Timmy’s free kick up field was headed on by Ashley for Booey to run on to and drill in from an acute angle to restore their lead. Future now threw everything at the visitors including bringing on their top goalscorer but the Village held firm and when the home side got a bit frustrated they were reduced to 10 men as the ref sent one of them off. With that bit of extra space and Future piling forward the Village started to spend some time in the opposing half and Maggot suddenly found himself in space but saw his shot go just past the post. Then with full time looming another breakaway saw Machin play in Maggot and this time he made no mistake as he fired home his 20th league goal of the season to seal a famous win. Minutes later the season was over and the Village had got the 2 points they needed to secure that runners up spot. With their end of season do later that night it was definitely a time to celebrate. So that’s it for another season which we all hope will be in the top flight.
