Report: Trafalgar Rangers 1 FCVillage 1
The Village were denied a deserved win by a superb display from the Trafalgar Rangers keeper as he made at least four excellent saves. The Village had to make a few changes from the previous week as both Machin and Crozzer reported in injured and then Timmy was unable to get off work so they were lucky that Nick returned and Steve’s injury wasn’t as bad as it appeared. Martin came in for Machin on the wing and Victor returned up front as they reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation. Having travelled the very short distance to Pitch 3 at Levers the game kicked off with the Village knowing that hadn’t beaten Trafalgar in four attempts and they wanted to put this right and make amends for the previous week’s disappointment.
They certainly set about their task with some vigour as they took the game to their hosts from the outset using both Kenny and Martin on the wings. The Village forced several early corners and from one of these the ball came off Victor’s shoulder but it was saved on the line by the keeper. However it wasn’t all going their way as Trafalgar came close themselves several times the closest being when Dava hooked the ball over his when it looked as though it might have crossed the line. With the ref well up field there was nothing else he could but wave play on. Then a good run down the right by Kenny saw his cross reach the far edge of the area where the incoming Martin fired in a great shot which the Trafalgar keeper dived full length to tip away. Both sides were going for it and it came as a surprise that when half time arrived it was still goalless and with the start of the second half going the same way a 0-0 score line looked on the cards.
The Village had the better of the chances as Maggot was through but saw his attempt pushed round the post by the keeper and then from one of the many corners they had the ball reached Booey who saw his goal bound volley pushed over the bar by the keeper. Finally the opening goal came when Victor picked the ball up midway in to the home half and he found Maggot out on the right. Maggot held off the challenge of two defenders and as he came in to the corner of the area he curled home a great shot for 1-0. Trafalgar now made a couple of substitutions and started to push forward looking for the equaliser and this was when Jamie came in to his own and got his M.O.M reward for his best save when he dived to tip a goal bound shot around the post. However he was finally beaten for the equaliser by another great shot when one of the subs cut in from the wing and fired home. The Village now had it all to do again but they came close yet again when the keeper made yet another great save as he kept out Maggot’s free kick and then a few minutes later when he was beaten for a second time the ref ruled it out for offside. Once again the team felt this was a bad decision as Nick broke up an attack on the half way line and ran off towards the Trafalgar goal and as he and a couple of other Village players reached the last defender he slipped it to Booey who ran on and planted it in to the net. However the whistle had gone but the ref from a long way off had decided someone was offside. Both sides kept going right to the end but a draw it was and the Village knew that they had put in a very display but had had the Trafalgar keeper in inspired form.
