Report: Trafalgar Rangers 6 FCVillage 1

The Village crashed out of the Truman Cup at the very frist hurdle but although the final scoreline reflects a thrashing, for the majority of the match it was a close affair. The Village saw the return of Kenny after a two game absence but still without Timmy or Ritchie in the centre of midfield they had bit of a reshuffle but kept the 4-5-1 formation.

This certainly didn’t affect them in the early stages as they played the better football with the home side relying on the big boot up to their strong running forwards to get them in to the match. With it being quite an open and even game the two critical moments for the visitors came close together midway through the half. A great attack ended with Kenny running unopposed in to the area but the keeper did well to parry his shot but only straight to Martin who saw his effort blocked as well. Still the ball wasn’t cleared and both Kenny and Martin saw their second attempts get blocked and saved before the ball was cleared away for a corner. Then from the resulting kick the came in to the crowded area and Nick up from the back was upended as he went to have a shot but the ref for some reason waved play on. Had the Village taken the lead at this point then the final outcome may well have been different and no one could have envisaged what would happen in the second half. As it was Trafalgar suddenly took the lead when the Village failed to clear a corner and the ball was lofted back in to the unmarked centre forward who volleyed home in style. It looked as though the Village would go in trailing at half time but when they got a free kick on the edge of the area Kenny quickly knocked it sideways to Maggot. He looked as though he was going to shoot but a defender had rushed out so he nicked it past him and then curled in a great superb effort in to the far corner for the equaliser.

The second half continued in the same vein with both sides searching for that all important next goal. Unfortunately for the Village it was a mistake from the usually reliable Leigh who miscued a back pass straight in to the path of the centre forward who lobbed home for his second to make it 2-1. Suddenly the game fell apart for the Village as everything seemed to go in favour of the home side and when they made it 3-1 soon afterwards with an excellent shot from the wing although he looked well offside when he got the ball it was game over. The Village introduced their three subs in the hope of getting back in to it but despite still playing the football the more direct approach from the home side paid dividends. The Village came closest when Maggot found himself in a one on one situation with the keeper who guessed the right way for his dive and he pushed the shot round the post. At the other end the Village defence and midfield were all over the place and Trafalgar ran in three more goals to make it 6-1 at the final whistle. Looks like a resounding thrashing but it was never that but it’s Trafalgar who progress to the quarter finals and the Village have to wait another year to make an assault on their division cup.
