Report: The Village decided to enter a 6-a-side League again and chose the newly formed Football Mundial League at Weatherhead School in Wallasey on a Thursday evening.
Game 1.
The opening week saw the Village up against the Lighty and when one of the players didn't turn up it meant Manager Steve had to get a kit on and he didn't disappoint. WIth Dava in goal, Steve joined Beattie at the back, Ritchie was in the middle, leaving Mikey and Matty doing the attacking. Both of these were in fine form and Matty notched four of the five goals with Mikey getting the other in a comfortable 5-1 win.
Team Line-up: Hughes: Beattie, Hill(S), Aspey, Kearney, Smith
Game 2.
Week 2 and the Village played Ilchester Park who had also won their first game. In came Harper to the defence in place of Steve and Dava Saunders came along as he was home for the week to go on the bench. The final scoreline of 5-4 may suggest a close game but in fact the Village were always ahead and it was only some slack play towards the end that gave that scoreline a rather flattering look. Both Matty and Mikey notched a brace with Beattie getting his first as the side went top of the table and are now the only team with a 1005 record.
Team Line-up: Hughes: Beattie, Harper, Aspey, Kearney, Smith, Saunders
Game 3.
Week 3 and it was top versus bottom as the Village took on JBL on a very windy night which spoilt much of the play. The Village only made one change as Andy took over in goal which meant Dava could play outfield and he started on the bench. The side found the JBL keepr in fine form as he kept out efforts from Matty, Mikey and Beattie and surprisingly it was still goalless at the turn around. However the second period saw the Village ease home with three goals from Matty(2) and Beattie and but for misses from Harper and Mikey in the last minute the final scoreline could and probably should have been more.
Team Line-up: Davies: Beattie, Harper, Aspey, Kearney, Smith, Hughes
Game 4.
Week 4 and a first defeat for the Village. They struggled all week to get a side as they lost Andy and Harper and then Mikey who turned up a bit under the weather! This meant that Dava returned in goal and there were first runouts for youngster Josh Dunroe and a last minute addition in Titch who had been training with Ritchie. Despite all this the side were equal to their opponents and had a fair few chances whilst dominating. However when they eventaully were awarded a penalty after the keeper had handled outside the box, Matty saw his spot kick go wide and then it all fell apart. IEBS scored two quick goals, the Village replied with an effort from Matty but IEBS finished the game with the best move of the game and scored to wrap up the points.
Team Line-up: Hughes: Beattie, Titch, Aspey, Dunroe, Smith, Kearney
Game 5.
Week 5 and the Village bounced back as they convincingly beat the top side 5-3. With Beattie, Andy and Mikey all last minute drop outs Steve had to don a kit, Harper went in goal and Dava played outfield. At the last minute they managed to get Lee and he came on when it was 1-1. The Village had already scored in their first attack but the Gunners equalised straight away. the Village then really truned it as they raced in to a deserved 5-1 lead with Matty notching another 2 for his hat-trick and both Ritchie and Lee scoring their first goals. The Gunners only replied in the few minutes as the Village tired with two late consolation efforts
Team Line-up: Harper; Hughes, Hill(S), Aspey, Dunroe, Smith, McCourt
Game 6.
Week 6 and a setback for the Village as they lost against the Glegg Arms despite dominating the game. In came Dava in goal, old and young Stewy's at the back with Dava being the 4th different goalie used. They found the Arms keeper in fine form as he made saves from virtually the whole side. Two breakaway goals were their undoing before a lone reply from Josh was too late to save them. They thought they had a penalty for a back pass but this turned in to a free kick which was no advantage to them at all. A settled side wil be needed if they want to win this league.
Team Line-up: Saunders; McIvor, Stewy, Aspey, Dunroe, Smith
Game 8.
Week 7 and a quick turn around for the Village as the Box of Toys failed to field a team so they played the Glegg Arms again. Many changes as only Josh and Stewy McIvor were there from the previous week with Crozzer and Spud making the debuts. As in the previous week the Village dominated the game, went ahead through Josh but bad marking let the Glegg in for two goals and it took a second goal from young Josh to salvage a point.
Team Line-up: Harper; Doran, Greenfield, McIvor, Dunroe, Kearney, Saunders
