Report: Corsair 1 FC Village 3
The Village bounced back in style as they beat the Corsair down at a foggy Woodchurch with M.O.M Danny Jones scoring two goals in the process. Several team changes were made what with the poor display the week before and a couple of injuries. Back in to the side came Dava and Fordy, Danny was promoted from the bench to the holding role in midfield for his first full match and Stewy Morrell moved out to the right wing. That left Harper, Knoxy, Spud and Rutter on the bench as Lee and Nick were both nursing injuries as the side took to the fog bound pitch that the ref passed playable just before the kick off.
With several ex Village players in the home side the visitors were well up for it right from the kick off and they took control during the opening period. However their domination didn’t pay dividends as they found the boggy uneven pitch a burden although they spent most of the time in the visitors half. Corsair gradually got their game going and took the lead some 20 minutes in when one of their forwards got the ball midway in the Village half and found himself all on his own. With the Village defenders shouting for offside and the ref waving play on he ran on and rounded Jay to slot home for the opener. The Village didn’t buckle and kept plugging away but the final ball in to the area just wasn’t coming off. Then from a corner Danny thundered a header on to the bar and the ball was cleared to safety as the game approached half time. Finally from yet another free kick the ball was swung in from the right and as Booey challenged for it in the area it fell to Stewy McIvor who took it on and planted his left foot shot in to the bottom corner for the equalizer and his first goal for the club.
Still all square at the turn around it was the turn of the home side to enjoy a good deal of the game but like the Village in the first half they failed to really trouble the visitor’s goal. This allowed the Village to stay in the match and they started to take control and force the issue. Then midway through the half after forcing several corners the Village took the lead for the first time when they broke out of defence and Maggot was put away down the left by Stewy Morrell. Maggot ran off towards goal and as a defender came across to him he unselfishly squared the ball to the supporting Danny and he coolly slotted home his first goal for the club to make it 2-1. The Corsair were now forced to come at the Village and this gave the visitors the time and space they wanted as they looked impressive down the wings through Mikey and Stewy Morrell. The chances started to arrive and the Village finally secured the two points when another break down the left found Danny yet again in the box and he clipped the ball over the keeper in to the far for his second of the match. Just before the end the Village thought they had notched a fourth when Maggot was presented the ball by a defender and he fired home but the ref after initially awarding the goal changed his mind and disallowed it for offside. In the end it didn’t matter as the game was over a few minutes later and the Village were well pleased to have overcome the team in second place with an excellent all round team performance and an M.O.M. display from two goal hero Danny.
