Report: FC Village 2 Corsair 3
A tale of two penalties was the main talking point from this game. With minutes to go a Corsair player went over in the box and the ref gave them a penalty which was converted to put them 3-2 up. Minutes later the visiting keeper hauled back Danny as he was just about to equalise and the ref decided it was a fair challenge and so the Village failed to get the spot kick which meant they lost a game they deserved to get something out of. The Village had a near full strength line up to choose from but half way through the first half they lost two players from their subs bench as they decided to go home. This meant Fordy (who was full of cold) and Dava Hughes put the spare kits on to give them the full compliment again.
Back to the game and with both sides knowing each other very well and the visitors fielding a couple of ex Village lads the home side seemed to let this affect their game. This coupled with the fact they were that bit more experienced which seemed to affect some of the ref’s decisions gave the visitors what seemed a slight advantage throughout the match. As seems the norm these days the Village gave away the opening goal rather than the opposition creating the chance themselves when a poor goal kick went straight to a Corsair forward who ran on and fired home. Then came the first costly decision by the ref that went against the Village when Nick was crudely tackled in the penalty area and he had to go off injured to be replaced by Anthony but the ref didn’t award a free kick against the Corsair or even speak to the player about the tackle. Incident number two came when the Village did in fact get the equaliser but it was full of controversy as Peter’s long through pass was diverted wide of his own keeper by a Corsair defender and the chase was on to put the ball in to an empty net. For the Village it was Maggot who ran after the ball but he was ceremoniously brought to the ground by the keeper as he ran back towards the goal. The ref blew for the penalty but amidst all the appealing to him as he would should by the letter of the law had to send the keeper off the ball had rolled in to the net. He now decided it was easier to award the goal for the equaliser but the Corsair still had their full compliment of players much to the dislike of the home side.
Still all square at the interval the Village came out at the start of the second half and took the game to their opponents. Despite dominating and trying to force the issue they never really threatened to take the lead and then midway through the half Corsair got a corner after a breakaway. When the ball came over a forward got in a shot which Jay superbly saved and then he palmed the rebound away but when the Village defence failed to clear away a third shot was fired in by an ex-Village player to restore their lead. Far from deflating the home side they continued to pepper away at the Corsair goal and were rewarded some 15 minutes from time when from one of numerous corners they had the ball reached Stewy on the far side of the box and he rifled it past loads of players in to the net for 2-2. Game there for the taking for both sides now but it was the visitors who got the slice of fortune as the game drew to a close. One of their forwards made a run in to the Village area and as one of the home defenders went in for the tackle he fell to the ground and his team mates appealed for the penalty. You’ve seen them given and turned away but the ref decided that this was one and the resultant kick was converted to put the Corsair ahead for a third time. Yet again the Village stormed back and when a free kick was floated in to the box Danny found himself in space and he chested it past the keeper. As he was about to knock the ball in the keeper once again grabbed him from behind and as Danny still tried to reach the ball a defender came in and managed to knock it wide of the post. The Village players and line all thought it was cast iron penalty and appealed like mad but the ref said no and to make things worse didn’t even award them the corner. A minute later from yet another corner Stewy was barged off the ball in the area but once again the ref waved play on. Minutes later it was all over and the Corsair joyfully had gained revenge over the Village.
