Report: FC Village 2 The Crown 1

A last minute winner from Captain Booie saw the Village defeat a resolute team in The Crown and so get past the first hurdle in the Regent Cup. With Dava missing through work and Stewy T out for the rest of the season with his knee injury the Village were forced to make at least 2 changes from the previous match but then they found Knoxy was unavailable right at the last minute. So Lee slotted in at right back and Anthony was asked to do a job on the right side of midfield leaving Martin, Jason, Crozzer and Lee on the bench.

Surprisingly this First Round tie was the first home game of the season for the Village and they were looking forward to using the wide expanses of the Levers pitch. Therefore it came as no surprise that they dominated the early proceedings using both wings especially Mikey down the left to attack the visitor’s goal. The chances started to arrive but the home side found the Crown keeper in fine form as he foiled Maggot with a great finger tip save and  then repeated the act when Mikey fired in a goal bound shot. With Maggot, Peter and Mikey all coming close as the half wore it looked like it was going to be one of those days but then with about 5 minutes left the ball was played through to the edge of the area and when Peter and the Crown keeper both went for it Peter won the challenge and managed to steer the ball home to put the Village ahead. With the home defence looking solid the team went in at the interval knowing they were doing well but still had a long way to go.

The start of the second half saw the Crown enjoy a long spell of domination but they like the Village found the opposing keeper making several great saves to keep them out. In fact it took a mistake in the home defence from Paul when he got caught in possession on the edge of the area to get them back level. A Crown forward knocked the ball wide to their right winger and he struck home a fine angled drive for the equaliser. It was anyone’s game now as both sides went for the winner. The Village thought they had found it when Maggot found space in the Crown area and his drilled shot was fumbled by the keeper on to the post but the ball spun back in to his arms rather than go over the line. Up at the other end Jay once again made a couple of crucial saves to keep the visitors at bay and then the Village had to replace Mikey with Martin as he had a tight hamstring. The clock was ticking down now and with extra time and even the possibility of penalties looming the Village made what they thought was one final launch in to the Crown area from one of Peter’s long throws. The ball was cleared down field and the Crown thought it was their chance now but out rushed Jay and he hammered it straight back up the field. It was a direct pass to Martin who controlled it and knocked it forward in to the path of Booey who ran in to the box, dummied his defender, pulled the ball back on to his right foot and fired home the winner. The Village players were wild with delight whilst the Crown’s were appealing for offside which the ref ignored. The Crown kicked off and got a corner but the Village defence cleared to safety and the ref blew for full time. So the Village are through to Round 2 and that’s 3 out 3 in the Cup’s so far this season, something they now have to take in to the league programme.
