Report: Future 4 FC Village 3
Football can be a cruel game sometimes and this was one of those days. The Village played extremely well especially in the first half but narrowly lost out in a seven goal thriller to a freak goal and a hotly disputed penalty. The Village kept the same line up that started the week before and this time Booey lasted longer than the 5 minutes against Moreton although it looked as though he wouldn’t after he made his first run. This meant Stewy McIvor returned to the bench and he was joined by the returning Peter, Rutter, Paul and Beattie as they made up a very strong bench.
On yet another sub standard playing surface the Village stormed in to action determined to make up for the cup defeat a few weeks earlier. The home side only troubled Crozzer in the Village goal once during the half and he easily saved that one. Otherwise it was all Village and it didn’t take them long to open the scoring when Booey broke through and saw his effort parried away by the keeper but only to Maggot who coolly slotted home for 1-0. Minutes later Maggot had a similar chance to double the lead but this time the keeper was in the way but his shot beat him only to rebound to safety via the foot of the post. The Village also forced a fair number of corners and from one of these midway through the half Knoxy flicked the ball over his head only to see it hit the other upright before it was cleared away. Both Danny and Mikey came close but despite all their dominance the Village still only led by that solitary goal when the half time whistle went.
The early part of the second half continued in the same vane with the Future failing to trouble the visitors and when Maggot scored from 25 yards out with a great effort it looked as though the Village had done the hard part. However the linesman had other ideas and put his flag up for offside which was very dubious and even the ref said that had there been no linesmen he would have given that. Mikey then came close as he saw his free kick cleared off the line from under the bar. Then suddenly it all went wrong for the Village. A poor goal kick from Crozzer went straight to a Future forward and he made the most of it by equalizing with a neat shot. Future now looked to take advantage but in a mad 10 minute spell both sides scored two more goals. First goal up saw Future take the lead when the Village failed to make a couple of tackles and the home winger curled in a great shot. However the Village stormed up the other end, got a corner and when that was cleared out to Dava some thirty yards out you just knew his shot was going to be out this world or go miles wide. His rare goals usually win the Goal of the Season and this could well be the favourite this year as his shot flew past a startled keeper to make it two apiece. Straight from the restart Future attacked the Village goal but from a long clearance up field Booey headed on for Maggot to run on to and his first effort hit the keeper but went back to him and bounced off his shins past a bemused goalie and the Village were back in the lead. They must have thought that would be enough but a freak goal once again brought the sides level. A long clearance out of the Future defence sailed over the Village defence and as Crozzer shouted ‘keeper’s ball’ the ball when it bounced it must have come off one of the many clumps of grass as it flew over Crozzer’s head and in to the net much to the amusement of the home side. All square yet again and now both sides went for it. Then with about 10 minutes remaining Paul and a forward chased a ball into the Village area and in the ensuing tussle the ref blew for a penalty. Everyone including most of the Future players were puzzled with that one but they didn’t argue and duly converted the spot kick to restore their lead and make it 4-3. The Village still had time to go back down the other end and for the second time in the game Maggot saw his goal bound effort come back off an upright. Minutes later a cross in to the Future box appeared to be handled by a defender but the ref waved the Village appeals for a penalty aside and that was all they could muster. The ref eventually blew for full time leaving the Village players devastated that a game they had controlled throughout had somehow been lost. That’s football!
