Report: Future 3 FC Village 1

The Village crashed out of the Regent Cup to probable favourites Future down on a quagmire of pitch down at the Woodchurch. With a near full strength squad to choose from the only decision was to pick the formation and it was decided to play Paul in the holding role instead of defence as they went 4-5-1. With Dava not being there for the kick off Beattie went in at right back for his full debut with Stewy joining Harper, Spud and Rutter on the bench.

Both teams looked evenly matched as they struggled with the poor surface but then midway through the half two quick goals from the home side left the Village with a mountain to climb. Both came from defensive errors as the defence got caught in possession of the ball and the visitors would never recover from this. They did get themselves back in with a chance when Booey was brought down just as he made a run into the area and the ref pointed to the spot. Maggot duly converted the spot kick to make it 1-2 and then came probably the defining moment for the Village. From a corner there was the mother of goalmouth scrambles and they must have had at least half a dozen shots that were either hit a defender or a Village player before Pete blasted over the bar. Had that gone in for an equaliser then things may have turned out differently.

Still trailing at the interval the Village now knew they had to go for it and made one change as Stewy replaced Beattie which saw the side go 3-5-2 as Paul slotted back in to defence, Pete moved up front and Stewy went on the wing. This however allowed Future to get in numerous breakaways which the defence and Jay did well to keep at bay. However they were helpless to prevent a third and decisive goal and despite coming close several times themselves the outcome of the match was beyond them. They battled to the end but in truth had been well beaten on the day and a third chance of reaching a cup semi final had eluded them.
