Report: Moreton 1 FC Village 4
The Village made it three wins in a row as they overcame bottom side Moreton with a second half blitz in which they scored all their four goals. The side travelled to Moreton knowing that they had lost another 3 players to choose from on the morning of the game. It was discovered that keeper Andy was away with the already unavailable Beattie, and then Colin phoned in to say he was in hospital after an accident at work and finally Peter didn’t show due to family things as they joined Paul and Rutter who had gone away for the weekend. This meant that Crozzer had to don the keeper’s jersey again, Fordy and Stewy Morrell came in to the back four and in a 4-4-2 line up Knoxy started up front alongside Maggot leaving Stewy McIvor on the bench.
However within 10 minutes of the kick off Stewy was on the pitch as Booey took a nasty tumble on the rutted playing surface and hurt his knee. After trying the magic sponge and using the spray he came back on but only lasted a couple of minutes before having to give way to Stewy. As stated the pitch was in a poor state despite being rolled during the week as there were tyre marks all over which had left ruts all over the field. This certainly put paid to any passing game from the Village and they struggled during the first half in which both sides resorted to long ball tactics. The closest they came to scoring was yet another thundering header from a corner by Danny which crashed off the bar and was cleared by the home defence. The team had several other half chances whilst down at the other end Crozzer was only troubled once with his defence in fine form. All this meant the game was still goalless at the interval but the Village knew that if they could get that first one then more should follow.
The start of the second half saw them take command and within minutes the Moreton keeper made a fine finger tip save to keep Maggot. The same player again went close with his next shot and you did start to wonder if it was going to be one of those days. However soon after a corner pinged around the home penalty and eventually fell to Buntzy who gleefully thundered the ball home for his first goal for the club. That was it as Moreton fell away and the Village came on very strong for the remainder of the game scoring three more goals in the process. The second was a real beauty, shame it came from a Moreton player. Mikey made a break down the left and his cross was met by the home left back with a great diving header that flew past his own keeper for 2-0 to the Village. The third went to Maggot as coolly converted a spot kick for his eighteenth of the season after the keeper brought him down before Stewy McIvor slotted home. The ref didn’t allow the goal as he had already blown for the spot kick so it was Maggot down on the score sheet and not Stewy. With the two points in the bag the Village gave Spud a run out as he replaced the hard working Knoxy and it was Spud who thundered home the fourth and final goal after yet another corner for his first of the campaign. He had already gone close minutes earlier and the Village had several other chances to have improved their goal difference. However they had to take just the four and right at the death they disappointingly for the back five let in a consolation goal. Just as the ref seemed to be blowing for full time he allowed Moreton to get away with a handball on the half way line and they got a corner from a Village clearance from which a player headed home at the second attempt. Still it was another two points for the Village team and a second half performance that proved they now have a strong squad to choose from as they enter the final two months of the season.
