Report: FC Village 6 Moreton 2

A blistering first half display from the Village when they scored five times saw them gain their first proper win of the season. There were a few enforced changes in defence as Dava and Harper were injured so Nick went to right back and Fordy to left as Paul returned to the centre to partner Anthony. Midfield only saw one change as Knoxy returned from 2 weeks out and in attack Steve Greenfield aka Spud got his chance when Peter failed to show due to personal reasons.

On a near perfect day for playing football the Village had to rely on Jay coming out on top in a one-on-one situation in the opening minute before they went on to dominate the first half, a half that saw Maggot at his very best as he scored four goals for the second time this season. It didn’t take him long to open the scoring for the Village when he raced on to a great through ball from Booey and coolly slotted past the keeper. Ten minutes later the score line was doubled when Booey and Maggot repeated the act and once again Maggot finished with aplomb. His other two goals came from attacks down the left wing as Fordy was linking well with Mikey in a new partnership. Firstly Mikey did a bit of wizardry out on the touch line and crossed for Maggot to do his own bit of skill in beating a defender on the goal line before unleashing a fine drive in to the far corner of the net for his hat-trick. Next up and Fordy hit a long through ball that found Maggot in free space on the edge of the area and he strolled through to slip the ball under the advancing keeper for his and the teams fourth. It was all Village as they swept aside a competent Moreton team and to finally kill them off the home side bagged a fifth goal when Maggot challenged a defender for the ball and it fell in to the path of an unmarked Knoxy and he coolly slotted home his first goal for the club.

With the game virtually won the half time talk once more was about trying to sustain the same pressure in the second period. But once again the Village were unable to do this although it was as much about Moreton changing things around as the Village easing off. Moreton swapped a couple of players around including their keeper but the Village weren’t helped by the fact they had already replaced the injured Fordy with Lee during the interval and then Spud with Rutter in an attempt to liven things up when midway through the half Stewy hurt his ankle and was replaced by Cottier for his 99th game for the club. Even though Moreton had a lot of the play they weren’t really troubling the home defence and goal and you knew it wasn’t their day when the Village broke away and scored a sixth. The ball had been cleared off the line from a corner and reached Knoxy just inside his own half where he ran on and then crossed for Mikey to pass the ball past a static keeper for his first goal for the club. Then with about 10 minutes left Booey got injured as well and with no subs left he went up front and Rutter slotted in to midfield but with the engine room gone the Village suffered for the remainder of the match. Firstly the defence failed to cut out a cross and the Moreton winger scored with a fine drive and then right on time no one was at the far post and their big defender headed home a second consolation goal for them. Seconds later and it was all over and the Village had secured their first ‘real’ win in the top division and against one of the more established sides.
