Report: Parkfield 2 FC Village 1
A game the Village should have won as they played the better football and created enough chances ended in huge disappointment as they let in two late goals to allow Parkfield to snatch the points. After the previous week’s problems when some players failed to show the side had a full squad to choose from with 5 subs and another two having to sit out altogether. So in the end there was only change in the starting line up as Paul Stewart made his debut in defence and Lee Wilson slotted in to midfield and Crozzer moved out to the bench to join Martin and three new lads in Mikey Kearney, Joseph Knox and Stuart Travis.
On yet another sunny afternoon and on a decent albeit narrow pitch the Village kicked off in a determined mood as they took the game to their opponents. They got the best possible start as they were ahead with less than 10 minutes gone when a cross from the left was knocked back in to the box by Lee and there was Booey to head home the opener. The Village were really buzzing and out of all the chances they created the best of them saw another header from Booey well saved by the keeper as he pushed it on to the bar before it was cleared and then Machin set up Peter whose fierce drive was once again well saved by the Willows goalie. Just before half time Maggot beat the offside trap but thinking the ref was going to blow for offside he snatched at his shot and blazed over. The Willows for their part stuck at it but never really troubled the Village defence and were reduced to long range shots. Then just before half time the Village were forced to make two substitutions which apart from the missed chances were anther reason why they would go on and lose the game. Firstly Paul picked up a bad knock on his knee from one of several bad challenges by one of the Willows midfielders and he was replaced by Mikey and then Peter pulled up with a strain and on came Knoxy in his place.
Despite the new look line up the Village still continued to take the game to the home side but even though they enjoyed most of the play and created numerous openings they failed to get that all important second killer goal. Down at the other end the Willows forced Jay to make one brilliant finger tip save but apart from that the only other thing worth mentioning was two more reckless challenges from the same player on Jay and Stewy and he was eventually booked for the latter but it was a case of that really should have happened in the first half. Still the Village couldn’t find a way through as the Willows defended really well and then it went all wrong for the visitors when from yet another long punt up field a home forward did well to hold off the challenge of the Village defence and he fired in the equaliser. Maggot now saw the goalie keep out his goal bound curler with a great save and the Village knew it wasn’t their day when from another long ball Lee and Jay got in a muddle and when Lee headed over Jay a Willows forward has the easiest task of tapping home to put his side in the lead. The Village now threw everything forward as they forced numerous corners and from one of these Booey saw yet another header hit the woodwork and rebound to safety. The Willows now played the remaining time out and must have been well pleased to have picked the two points when the ref blew the final whistle. For the Village they knew they had played well but it had been just one of those days in front of goal.
Footnote:- The following day the Village recieved a transfer request from Kevin Machin on the Sunday as he stated he wanted to join his mates who play for Corsair. He duly transferred later that day and the club would like to thank him for assisting them in getting promotion last season and wish him all the best for the future.
