Report: FC Village 0 Parkgate 1

The Village got dumped out of the Wirral Junior Cup when despite dominating the game they failed to get a shot on target and the one goal Parkgate scored was enough to see them through to the Semi Finals. As far as the line up went there was only one change from the previous week as Rutter was given a start up top alongside Maggot with Spud dropping to the bench as the side went for pace rather than brawn. Spud was joined by Lee, the returning Peter, and new lads Stewart Morrell and Danny Jones with Cottier and Crozzer missing out as they joined the injured Dava and Harper on the sidelines.

For this fourth game in a row down at Levers the wind returned but it was nothing like a couple of weeks ago and it didn’t spoil the game. The Village made their usual early assault on the visitor’s goal as they sought the initiative but they would find they were up against a resolute Parkgate defence. During that first forty five the Village had a long range effort from Anthony that just went over the bar and an in-swinging corner from Maggot that came back off the crossbar as the closest they came to scoring. They also had several goal mouth melees where the Parkgate defenders managed to block everything as the Village players tried to get their shots in. One of those blocks came after Booey was nudged in the back and it looked like a definite penalty but when the ball fell to Rutter and his shot was blocked the ref thought that was the advantage played. Parkgate themselves never tested Jay in the goal but midway through the half they did  breakaway down the left and their winger put over a great cross which was headed home by the centre forward for what would be the only goal of the game.

The second half virtually mirrored that of the first as the Village plugged away at trying to force themselves back level but it looked as though they were playing just as Parkgate wanted them to. The visitors defence was playing very deep and unlike the Village they were pumping up high balls to Maggot and Rutter but most of these were easily dealt with by the big strong Parkgate defenders. A couple of half chances came as Booey headed over from a corner and Stewy saw his long range effort whistle past a post. The Village then brought on Peter hoping his strength would help them but the Parkgate defence were well up for it and kept the home side at bay. Once again Parkgate relied on the breakaways as they sought a second killer goal but like the Village even though they attacked in numbers they never really troubled the home goal. In fact the best chance both sides thought they had were penalty claims as firstly the ball appeared to hit the hand of a Parkgate defender before he cleared it away and then Nick looked to have pulled his attacker down with a goalmouth tackle but on each occasion the ref blew play on. Eventually time ran out for the Village and their Wirral cup run had come to an end as Parkgate find themselves in the last four.
