Report: Sheridans 2 FC Village 4

Maggot's third hat-trick of the season saw the Village reach the last 8 of the Regent Cup but it was a hard earnt team performance right from M.O.M Jay through the back four and five midfielders to the lone star striker that contributed to the win. The Village opted for 4-5-1 formation with Rutter moving out to the wing to replace the unavailable Knoxy, Lee came in at right back as Nick moved back to the centre of defence and Anthony slotted in as the holding midfielder. With several others away with Knoxy or injured the side only had the one sub in Spud as on arrival they thought the game might get called off. The pitch had a lot of surface water on and some deep puddles but the ref got the home side to sweep these away and announced the game would go ahead.

So on a slippery and sticky surface and going uphill the Village struggled to get in to the game as they came to terms with their formation but it still came as a surprise when Sheridan’s opened the scoring. This came when from a long through ball Jay made a block on the edge of the area when he tackled a forward but Nick who was in attendance lost sight of the ball as it stuck there in the mud and the forward had the simple task of tapping the ball home. The Village however didn’t let this setback affect their game as they kept plugging away down both wings through Mikey and Rutter, forced several corners and nearly equalized when Rutter saw his snap shot go just past the post. The Village duly got their reward just before the break when from a free kick Fordy knocked the ball in to the area and when two home defenders jumped for it at the same time the ball fell nicely for Maggot to hit home a stunning volley in to the roof of the net for 1-1.

It was still level pegging at the interval with the Village having the advantage of going down the hill but in to the areas of the pitch that were now badly cut up. With the midfield trio playing some neat short passes the Village were looking dangerous and they took the lead soon after the restart when Maggot went in for a challenge in the area and the ball flew off his boot in to the corner of the goal for his and the sides second of the game. Minutes later a great move ended with a third goal as Maggot sent Mikey off down the left and he beat his defender before crossing in to the box where Rutter was on hand to tap in his first goal for the club. The rest of the team were well pleased for him and may have thought that was game over but the home side had other ideas. They now started to press the Village goal and this was when Jay came into his own and earned his M.O.M with several excellent saves. He had already made one in the first half but was eventually beaten when with about 20 minutes left on the clock a corner was swung in and headed home by a Sheridan’s player to reduce the deficit. The home side now threw everything at the Village defence but Jay and his back four stood firm and with them pressing in numbers the Village broke away in the last minute and when Maggot got the ball inside the box he beat a couple of defenders as they dived in before poking the ball home for his hat-trick to seal the victory. Seconds later it was all over and the Village were deservedly through to the quarter finals where they meet Future some time in January.
