Report: Wirral Wanderers 1 FC Village 5

The Village cruised through to the last 8 of the Wirral Junior Cup as five first half goals from Maggot(4) and Peter saw them overcome old rivals Wirral Wanderers down at Coronation Park. After having their last two games called off due to one team failing to field a side and then the bad weather the Village were really up for this Second Round Wirral Junior Cup with a place in the last 8 at stake. Up against old foes Wirral Wanderers the Village had a near full strength squad to choose from and indeed they were able to name 5 subs as they lined up with an attacking 4-4-2 formation as only Colin and Rutter (both injured) and Martin and Anthony (both working) were unavailable.

Determined to make a good start and this time build on it the Village were straight out of the blocks and before the home knew what had hit them the opening goal had been scored. A break down the middle ended with the Maggot being played through and as he held off the challenge of the defender he clipped the ball past the advancing keeper with his right boot and saw it go in via the post. Minutes later the Village had doubled their lead when Maggot mirrored his first goal but this time his shot was with his trusty left foot and the ball went in via the other upright. The visitors were really flying and with Knoxy (on for the unwell Stewy T) and Mikey dominating the wings they were carving the Wanderers defence with ease. It wasn’t long before the Village increased their lead when another through ball was chased by Maggot and as he and the Wirral keeper collided the ball fell to Peter who hooked it in to the net with his right boot for his first of the season. It was all Village as Stewy M saw his long range effort graze the top of the bar and then Maggot combined well with Mikey and Peter to lob home from distance for what would have easily won goal of the month but the ref blew for offside. However the Village still and in particular Maggot hadn’t finished and the killed the game off as a contest with a fourth goal when Mikey made a great run down the left wing beating a couple of defenders in the process before crossing for Maggot to beat two of his team mates to the ball and rifle in for his hat-trick. Minutes later it was 5-0 as Maggot completed a MOM first half display when this he cut in from the right, turned his defender and thumped home with his right foot to take his personal tally to four. The home side then just before half time had their first attempt at goal but it sailed over the bar.

With the game won the Village knew that the second half was all about keeping it going, not relaxing and try and give two of the others subs a run out. As so often when a side wins the match in the first half of a game they can’t repeat the act in the second 45 especially if the other team come out in a determined mood. Wirral had a much better half and they were rewarded with the only goal in that period as they scored a consolation effort towards the end of the match. This didn’t mean that the Village didn’t keep going and in truth they probably should have scored at least another three. However poor finishing, the woodwork and some excellent saves from the home keeper they failed to find the net again. Peter blazed one over the bar when clean through and fired wide soon after with only the keeper to beat, Maggot saw his rasping drive crash off the bar and Maggot, Peter, Knoxy and Booey all saw the goalie keep out their efforts with some great saves. With the game won the visitors were also able to give both Lee and Jason a run out from the bench. So through to the last 8 for the first time ever the side find they have been drawn against Parkgate from the Chester in the quarter finals. On the Sunday Stewy T’s footy weekend went from bad to worse as he got a serious injury playing for his Sunday morning side and he will be out a few months at least. The club wish him a speedy recovery.
