Report: Gags Hill 0 FC Village 4

The Village made it in to the 3rd round of the Wirral Junior Cup as they overcame a determined Gags Hill side and the final scoreline rather flattered the visitors. Despite still missing several key players the side welcomed back Danny, Fletcher and Stewy McIvor for this 2nd round tie down in Birkenhead Park. On a sunny afternoon and with the pitch looking in good condition for a change the team were up against a new side in Gags Hill from Div 2 who included one of their ‘old boys’ and he would go on and be named their M.O.M.

The Village took a while to get their game going which allowed the home side to enjoy a good deal of possession without actually testing the visitor’s goal. Slowly but surely the Village started to make things happen and the Gags keeper made a fine save to keep out Mikey’s drive before they opened the scoring. A corner from Stewy Morrell was curled in to the box and there was Booey who saw his header come off the head of a defender and wide of the keeper for 1-0. The expected goal rush if there was ever one never came as the Village huffed and puffed their way through to half time with the home side getting stuck in and playing some good stuff but coming up short in the final third. The interval arrived with the Village still leading by the only goal and they knew they would have to step up a gear for the second period.

However they once again never really got going and it took the introduction of Scott midway through the half to change things. Up until then the game wasn’t much of spectacle especially from the visitors but they were just about doing enough as the back four were looking really solid and Kano had hardly anything to do. That all important second goal came when Booey’s pass was lobbed over the keeper and this allowed the Village to bring on their two other subs in Matty W and Andy. With the minutes ticking by the Village suddenly found themselves flattered somewhat with a final tally of four goals as Booey headed home Stewy Morrell’s free kick and then Scott broke free on the half way line and ran on to coolly slot home his first goal for the club. As said that was a bit unjust on the home side as they were most certainly not well beaten on the day, the Village had just that bit more than them when going forward. So the visitors are through to the 3rd round where they now have a home tie against Cammell Lairds.
