Report: New Ferry Wirral Hotel 1 FC Village 5
An excellent second half from the Village with a hat-trick from M.O.M Matty Smith and two goals from Danny Jones saw them overcome New Ferry Wirral Hotel for a second win in a row. A couple of team changes were enforced as both Josh and Fordy were injured so with Paul and Nick returning to the centre of defence, Danny was pushed back in to midfield in place of Crozzer and Scott came in on the left wing. Otherwise it was the same as the previous game with Harper and Rutter (but that’s another story) joining Matty W on the bench.
On a bumpy playing surface that saw no grass in both goalmouths and it’s still only September the first half action was mostly played in the middle of the park with both sides creating very little in the way of chances. In fact it was the home side New Ferry who had the best chance as Kano pulled off a great finger tip save to keep a free kick out. For the Village they tried to play their football using both Cairnsy and Scott on the wings but didn’t really trouble the Ferry defence and apart from Kano’s save the only other note worthy thing from the visitors was Stewy was replaced by Harper due to a groin injury.
For a while it at the start of the second half it looked like the game was going the same way as it had in the first and it was going to take a mistake or a piece of magic to change things. Fortunately for the Village it was the latter as a throw in reached Matty S on the corner of the penalty area and he turned his marker to curl home a glorious shot in to the far corner of the goal for the opener. Within minutes he had scored again when this time a cross was flicked on in to the box and he headed home. The Village were in complete control now and Scott had a great chance to increase their lead but he hit his effort over the bar. The team now tried to bring on Rutter for a run out but as his name hadn’t been given to ref he had to rather embarrassingly leave the field again and manager Steve had to take the flak for that. However it wasn’t long before a third goal arrived as Booey flicked on corner with his head and there was Danny at the far post to nod home his first of the season. The goals were flowing now and New Ferry had a glimpse that maybe they could get back in to the match when Kano made a rare slip and the ball fell nicely for a home player to knock home to reduce the arrears. Their hopes didn’t last very long for within minutes Matty got the ball in the six yard box and swivelled to fire home his first hat trick for the team. The Village with their 3 goal cushion restored now gave M.O.M. Matty a rest as he was replaced by his namesake Matty W. Still the Village poured forward and a fifth goal soon arrived when Cairnsy set the surging Danny free in on goal and he slipped the ball past the advancing keeper for his second of the match. That was it as far as goals went but it could easily have been more as Cairnsy saw his superb volley go just over and then Danny was denied his hat trick not once but twice, firstly by a great last ditch tackle and then a block. Down at the other end the back four and Kano dealt with everything thrown their way and the team will miss Paul now he has gone in for his nose op. Minutes later it was all over and the Village had made it two wins in a row as they climb the league table.
