Report: FC Village 6 Orange Ath Res 0
The Village completed the double over Orange Ath with a comprehensive win down at Levers that took them to the top of the table. With Matty and Jim out injured and Carl unavailable the side saw Nick make his first start in ages, Beren and Peter V get run outs and the return of Neish up front to partner the starting Maggot. With Phil a no show, Peter I and Stuey joined Sean on the bench.
The Village wanted an early goal in this match because when they played Orange at their ground earlier in the season it took them until the second half before they saw any reward for their dominance. But once again they created the chances and failed to take them and as the half wore on it looked like it a case of déjà vu. All four forwards had chances to score as John saw hit effort skim the post, Neish just shot wide, Maggot shot straight at the keeper and Beren blasted wide when clean through on goal. Ian came the closest however when a combination of the keeper and the post deflected his effort away for a corner. Adam had seen a couple of free kicks barely trouble the keeper when he eventually opened the scoring as he curled in an effort from around the penalty spot following a corner. With Orange rarely entering the Village half the home side doubled their lead just before the interval when Peter V broke down the right and crossed for John to head home for 2-0.
So despite being two up at the interval the Village knew there were a couple of gears they could go up before being satisfied with their performance. Once again it was them forcing the issue with Orange defending bravely and trying to relieve the pressure with the odd breakaway. Goal number three came when Maggot was played in down the left and he sent over a great cross which Neish headed home at the far post for his fifth of the campaign. The home side now made a triple substitution as Peter I, Stuey and Sean replaced Peter V, Iain and Beren and they just slotted in the same positions. It took these three a few minutes to settle in but once they had, the Village cruised home adding another three goals and could have even scored a couple more. Sean nearly broke his long barren spell in front of goal when the ball reached him at the back post but a last ditch block stopped his shot from going in. Goal number four came when Peter I crossed for John to head home from close range for his second and this soon followed by Adam completing his brace when he weaved his way in to the area before curling the ball home. The final goal fittingly went to M.O.M. John when Sean’s cross bypassed several players before falling to him and he fired home for 6-0 and his hat-trick. So a comfortable win and a clean sheet which saw the side go top as the leaders dropped points in their match.
