Report: FC Village 3 Rangers Breaks 1

The Village got back to winning ways as they beat Rangers Breaks down at Levers to continue their 100% League record. As far as team news went the Village were missing several key players as Paul, Carl, Nick and Damo were all out injured and both Leigh Houghton and Mikey were unavailable. With all those central defenders missing it meant that Adam had to drop in to the back four with Hutton and they were flanked by Peter V and Paddy. Sean returned to the wing and John joined Dava and Iain in a midfield three which left Matty up top on his own. Maggot and Beren were joined on the bench by Peter I for what would be his first appearance of the season after a lengthy injury.

It didn’t take the Village long to get in to their stride and after an early scare when a wayward back pass was neatly intercepted by Jay they dominated without really getting anywhere as most of their attacks broke down with a misplaced pass or cross. Josh looked to have been put clean through but was brought down when clear and this resulted in just a free kick for the home side. Adam’s fired in a shot that went just wide but minutes later they opened the scoring. A great through pass from Adam split the Rangers defence wide open and Matty ran through to fire home for 1-0. Several half chances came and went and Iain looked to have scored his first goal for the club but he was ruled offside went as the Village dominated through to the end of the half but they still only had that single goal to show for their dominance.

With Beren replacing the out of sorts Sean on the right wing the home side continued to take the game to the visitors but it just wasn’t going their way in the final third. With this in mind they brought Maggot on to replace Dava as they looked for that all important second goal and they thought they had got it within minutes of the change. Matty broke free and crossed for Maggot to steer home only for the ref to disallow for offside. However their dismay was soon forgotten as from the next attack Matty once again broke in to the area and saw they keeper save his shot and when the ball rebounded to him he pulled it back for the most unlikely of goal scorers Beren to coolly fire home for 2-0. That was Beren’s first goal for the club and fully deserved for his second half performance in his new position. Then the Village wrapped up the points with the best goal of the game as Paddy made a great run down the left and sent over a quality cross which MOM Matty dived to head home for his brace. Game won but the Village had a somewhat nervous end to the game when the ref gave Dava a second yellow for kicking the ball away as he applied the letter of the law and so to shore things up at the back they brought Peter on for Josh and Adam moved in to midfield allowing Peter to slot in the back four. Just when it looked like they had kept that clean sheet they wanted, Rangers were awarded a penalty with just a few minutes to go when a backward header left Jay short and he upended a forward and the spot kick was slotted home for a mere consolation. Minutes later and it was all over and the Village were back on track with an important win.
